In it’s early years it was used as a place of refuge or rest for numerous settlers and travelers as they made their way by. It was even used as a camp site where soldiers ordered by President George Washington stayed, as well as folks involved in the Whiskey Rebellion, which was caused by an excise tax that was placed on whiskey, to help fund the national debt..
